Stefanie Andersen (Step1) is a producer and turntablist who has been using Ableton Live for over a decade. She’s known for her live performances that incorporate on-the-fly beatmaking, finger drumming, and scratching. Her controller of choice is Push 2, and she was recently featured by Ableton as a Push performance artist. She has also contributed lessons and content to Melodics, an app designed to help musicians hone their finger drumming skills.
Stefanie has an extensive background in education and music scholarship. She received her Master’s degree in cultural studies and has presented papers on hip-hop at academic conferences across the country. A pioneer in the field of hip-hop studies, she taught the very first hip-hop course at Florida State University in 1999. She is a former high school English teacher, and she spent many years working as a software trainer, curriculum developer, and designer for a Fortune 500 company.
Given that Stefanie's twin passions are music and teaching, it's only natural that she found a way to combine them. In 2016, she opened a music production school in Oakland called Sequence One. Since then, she's been teaching Ableton courses and workshops, where students enjoy her thorough, hands-on curriculum and her clear, engaging teaching style.
Stefanie also co-organizes the Bay Area Ableton User Group in San Francisco, and she volunteers as an instructor with Today’s Future Sound, a non-profit in the Bay Area that provides a creative outlet for kids by teaching them how to produce music.
